Slave by John MacArthur – A Book Review
August 12, 2011
I recently obtained a copy of “Slave” by Dr. John MacArthur. This book looked interesting and I was hooked from the start! Dr. MacArthur reveals a hidden truth in this book which has completely changed my understanding of what it means to be a Christian. Dr. MacArthur explains how our modern translations have done the church an injustice by changing the “slave” terminology to soften the effect it has on the reader. Our Western minds find the concept of slavery radical and profound. . . but that is what we are called to be. . . slaves to Christ!
Being a “slave” to Christ means so much more than just claiming the name Christian. . . it means that we are bought with a price and He is our Owner and Master. MacArthur explained in this book how helpless and hopeless we were in our slavery to sin before Christ and how “We are no longer subject to our sinful passions; now we are subjects of our heavenly King.” Only one thing matters – pleasing the Master.
MacArthur further explains how being a slave to Christ is true freedom. He states how many in the church misunderstand that just calling yourself a Christian isn’t enough. . . you have to follow the Master if you want to experience freedom.
“Slave” is one of the best books I have read from MacArthur in a long time. I like MacArthur’s books, but haven’t really gotten into one since his book “Our Sufficiency in Christ” published in 1998. “Slave” is a MUST READ and I give it 2 thumbs way up and will put in on my list of books to reread and place it in my top 10 favorite books of all times. I hope you can read a copy of this amazing book, it will change your view of sin and open up your understanding to an amazing hidden truth in Scripture.
If you cannot afford a copy I would be happy to lend you mine. . . as long as I get it back!

Book Review: Grace For You by John MacArthur
April 18, 2011
I recently picked up Grace for You by Dr. John MacArthur. It is a small book and a very easy read. I read the entire book in about 45 min. I expected , a thought provoking light read. What I got was a clear explanation of the prodigal son’s life. Dr. MacArthur challenged the way I viewed this parable, and the way I view sin and forgiveness. I was expecting a light read and received a heavy heart. I wasn’t ready for the flood of thoughts and emotions that accompanied this 58 page book. . . nor was I ready to have my counseling worldview challanged.
I wanted to quote one small passage from the book:
“The tenacity of some sinners is impossible to explain rationally. Some people are so determined to have their own way that even when they are forced-fed the distasteful consequences of their transgressions, they still will not give up the pursuit. They might literally be sick to death of their sin’s repercussions, and yet they will not give up the sin itself. Sin is a bondage they are powerless to break. . . We can’t possibly atone for the sins we have committed, so we can’t make out guilt go away. There is absolutely no earthly answer for such a dilemma. It will not be found in psychology, group therapy, or self-help — and it is certainly not found in drugs, alcohol, or any other form of escape. . . “ Dr. MacArthur then goes on to explain the role of forgiveness like I have never heard it explained before!
I must say this little book is packed full of powerful punches that will keep me thinking and changing for days to come. I give Grace for You a 2 thumbs WAY up! I challange you to pick up a copy and see for yourself. It makes a perfect read along for the Easter season. Of let me know and you can borrow my copy. . . if you can read through all the underlining and scribbling

Book Review – Your Money Map by Howard Dayton
March 16, 2011
One of my New Years resolutions was to start reading more. . . so I did. I started reading “Your Money Map – A Proven 7-Step Guide to True Financial Freedom” by Howard Dayton. I thought it looked interesting and ‘Who couldn’t use some financial tips’.
I finished it today and really wanted to tell you about it. I really enjoyed it. Howard Dayton is a master at explaining money and has laid out a easy 7-Step way to become financially free!
I think the chapter on credit card use should be read by everyone! “If you can’t pay it off every month. . . don’t use credit cards!” He talks about simple steps to set your financial affairs in order and how to stay debt free.
His book is loaded with tips, websites, and more. . . It is a great resource.
I don’t agree with all areas of the book, but feel it is a good start to getting out of debt. I also enjoyed the easy reader friendly style. I often find myself reading a page or two and having to put my book down. Mr. Dayton’s book lends itself to this style of reader well. Overall I have to give it two thumbs up! I hope you pick up a copy for yourself, of just ask to borrow my copy (if you can read through all my scribbles).

Atlas Shrugged ~ A Book Review
February 10, 2010
Atlas Shrugged is a novel written by Ayn Rand first published in 1936. It is a huge book and a long read. . . but well worth the effort. I first picked up this book upon the recommendation of my brother-in-law. He said that I would really like it. I then heard reviews by a few big time radio hosts and thought I would give it a try.
Now I have not quite finished it but am very pleased with the book thus far (there is a little problem with a few cuss words). Ayn Rand brilliantly contrasts Capitalism and Big Government (Selfishness). Her book shows how a nation run by Big Government fails and fails miserably. Without giving away the plot let me just say whenever Government determines that the poor DESERVE what the rich have, trouble will always ensue. You don’t get rich by having the “I deserve it. . . so give it to me” mentality. If you deserve it. . . work for it! A nation based on a capitalistic system will thrive.
So go buy Atlas Shrugged, you won’t be disappointed! I think our government leaders should read it, it may change their liberal views. Mr. President, you can have my copy if you promise to read it
. One last thing. . . “Who is John Galt?”
The Ishbane Conspiracy ~ A Book Review
December 21, 2009
I just finished reading The Ishbane Conspiracy an interesting read with some soul searching messages.
Here is a brief synopsis: Four friends are about to leave High School and are planning their goals for the future, unaware that there is someone watching them. . . planning for their demise. Threatened by competing worldviews and the lures of a culture of death—including the occult—they must take drastic steps to resist and survive.
Even though the book was written as a novel for teens, I enjoyed it. I did feel that the writing was a little “predictable”, and felt that the writers tried their hardest to add in all their religious pet peeves (but it is their book so I guess that is okay).
As I neared the middle of the book I got a little distracted. . . but kept reading. As I continued reading I started to really understand where the authors hearts were and was convicted about how many things have distracted me from sharing my faith with others. As for the demons and angels, I have always been fascinated with them and thought it added a good touch to the story line.
Overall I give it a thumbs up. . .
Feel free to read it and let me know what you think.

Where is the Source of Our Meaning? (A Book Review)
June 24, 2009
I am currently reading a book called “Bold Purpose” by Dan Allander and Tremper Longman III (ISBN# 0-8423-5351-8). I am really enjoying the book, it is an easy read surrounded by tough issues and questions.
The book is based on Ecclesiastes and seeks to answer the question “Have we lost the meaning and purpose in life?”
Although I have not finished reading the book yet, I thought it was so beneficial that I should let you know about it.
“We long for a meaningful life, but many of us have exchanged meaning, purpose, and abundance for over commitment, pressure, and hectic schedules. It is time to reflect and regroup.”
“To fear God is to put Him first, above all things. It is the fear of God that enables us to find meaning. . . “
The current question the book is seeking to answer is what is our source of meaning? Most of us have to say it is family, or our jobs, or golf (insert your favorite activity). If Christ is not the source of our meaning then our life WILL be meaningless!
Check the book out, you won’t be sorry!
